Xin Yi and Jade set-up a nail art blog on just a whim. What they didn’t know is that they would soon have more than 4000 followers on Tumblr! Chibinails does nail art and gives advice in the form of tutorials on how to make the adorable designs that you see featured on the blog.

How did you come up with the idea for Chibinails?

Jade: At first I had the idea to open up a nail blog only for myself so I reused the word "Chibi" from my own default screen name "Chibiyumi". When I brought Xin Yi in, I told her that we could change the blog name but it seems that we'll be sticking to it for a while.

XY: Initially I actually had no plans on starting a nail blog at all because I was posting my nail art pictures on Facebook at that time. But when Jade started Chibinails, she asked if I’d like to join her and I thought, “Hey why not? She’s my good friend and nail buddy, and it’ll be fun!”

What are your inspirations?

Jade: I usually get ideas from Kpop and also from Tumblr itself!

XY: Nail art blogs and anything with fancy designs on it (eg: clothes, wrapping paper, etc).

How did the two of you meet?

XY: We met in college while we were doing our A-Levels at Taylor’s University College. Although we were classmates, we weren’t very close initially to each other because we only took two common subjects. But one day I saw Jade with her nails polished and manicured, and I knew straight away that we would hit it off!

What made you want to post your designs on Tumblr?

Jade: Nothing in particular. I thought since I already have a personal blog on Tumblr, I might as well share my designs with people who are interested. Then I dragged Xin Yi in with me haha.

Best thing about running a tumblr blog?

Jade: We have about 4,000 followers now and the response has been really great. Lots of them keep coming to request for designs and ask for nail tips. Occasionally we get really sweet messages from our followers and that really encourages us to keep running this nail blog.

XY: I guess one of the best feelings would be when our followers send in pictures of their nail design inspired by our designs.

Worst thing about running a tumblr blog?

Jade: Well easily you can say that people get a bit too demanding because we don't update very often. I have a full time job and Xin Yi's a Business student so we don't always have the time to come up with nail designs. Sometimes they demand for video tutorials which are not easy to make since it’s quite time consuming.

Where do you buy your nail art tools from?

XY: For the brushes, we buy them either from nail art stores or any art craft stores. We usually get our brushes from a nail art store located in Asian Avenue at Sunway Pyramid, or from the small nail art stalls that you can find at 1 Utama or The Curve.

Any business plans for the future?

Jade: We did think about making a business together but I guess not at the moment – probably later on.
